6.1
Identify and plan professional learning needs

Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers in identifying professional learning needs.

An important aspect of the teaching profession is professional development. It became evident that high quality and professional development in the field of dance was hard to come across. I began offering workshops for school teachers for the purposes of professional development after years of training and teaching in this field using highly effective pedagogies and teaching strategies. In planning my workshop I referred to the Australian Curriculum and created content resources and activities that directly related to teaching and learning dance.

Personally, I continue to not only research effective pedagogies but practice my teaching and learning strategies to ensure that I am delivering the highest standard that I possibly can (providing quality learning experiences.)

Below is a copy of my workshop agenda that highlights the learning outcomes that participants will achieve and thus enable them to maintain and support the Australian Professional Standards.

6.3
Engage with colleagues and improve practice

Seek and apply constructive feedback from supervisors and teachers to improve teaching practices.

During my placement I received constructive feedback from my mentor teacher via email for a year 10 drama class to improve my teaching practice. Receiving this feedback enabled me to improve my practice and consider any modifications for how i will implement my future teaching strategies.

6.4
Apply professional learning and improve student learning

Demonstrate an understanding of the rationale for continued professional learning and the implications for improved student learning.

As highlighted in 6.1 and 6.2 teaching as a profession requires constant and continuous professional learning. Not only does this ensure that we as educators remained up to date and knowledgeable about best practices in teaching and learn with our students, it enables us to implement our new skills and knowledge with students in the classroom.

Recently I presented and participated In the Panpapanpalya joint dance congress in Adelaide. I experienced a wonderful workshop on African Dances by Alfdaniels Mabingo. This workshop highlighted the role of pedagogy and inclusivity through dance. I also discovered that my own teaching practice utilised similar thinking, through inclusive approaches to dance and games based approaches that enable students to learn fundamental concepts through play (games based approach) and collaboration. This was scaffolded with music, movement and interactivity. Effective teaching was modelled and best practices in pedagogy were shared.

This is an excerpt of the Panpapanpalya Congress timetable which outlines the depth of professional learning and knowledge offered by professionals in the dance and dance education industries from around the world.
